Han Xiangzi

Han Xiangzi is said to have been the nephew of Han Yu, a famous and accomplished writer of the Tang Dynasty. As a youth Han Xiangzi was not keen on study, instead preferring to drink and spend time with Buddhist monks and Taoist priests. Lu Dongbin taught him the secrets of Taoism, helping him to become immortal.

One reason put forward for him being a celestial was his gardening ability. After achieving immortality, he wanted to teach his uncle, but first needed to convince him of his ability. At a banquet held by Han Yu, his nephew first filled every guest’s wine glass from the same tiny jug. Having got everyone’s attention, he sprayed water into a clay bowl full of soil. Immediately a bud emerged, and continued to grow rapidly until it was a fully grown peony tree in blossom.

According to historical records, Han Yu really did have a nephew by the name of Han Xiang, but he must have been keen on study because he was a successful candidate in the imperial examinations, the route into the service of the emperor.
